In a paper published in 2002, the authors concluded as follows "Using electrostatics for coating shredded cheese will make the process more economical by reducing waste and eliminate the need to add excess coating. Use of electrostatic coating improves the shelf life of shredded cheese significantly. The drum method of coating is a more effective method of coating than the belt conveyor, even when electrostatics is used with the belt. Electrostatic coating is also a more environmentally friendly process, which reduces exposure of workers to inhalation. The application of electrostatics to shredded cheese has been around for over 20 years, however, the availability of economical, proven and easy to integrate equipment has only been perfected when Spice Application Systems of Oxford UK developed the technology that ARBO has been marketing and installing in the Americas for over a decade. With over 100 shredded cheese lines equipped with the ARBO-SAS electrostatic dust mitigation system, the processors of shredded cheese are adopting this technology for process improvement throughout the continent.
